Valentine’s Day Chocolate Bark & Tag Printable

Sharing an easy recipe for Valentine’s Day Chocolate Bark and a free Valentine’s Day gift tag printable.

Christmas is still a wee bit in the rearview mirror, and here we are talking about Valentine’s Day. At least I waited until one holiday is over before I start talking about the next one (I’m looking at your department stores and malls!)

And does it seem just a wee bit unfair that one month after we resolve to eat lighter and healthier, we have a holiday that pretty much centers around sweets and chocolates?

Be that as it may, Valentine’s Day is right down the road, so we might as well get on board and plan some sweets for our sweets!

Last year I made these truffles, which are truly truffle-licious but in a heavy cream and butter way.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that…I love butter and cream as much as the next gal.

But..in an effort to walk the oh-so-fine and difficult line between ‘chocolatey-deliciousness’ and ‘let’s keep our waistline in mind,’ I decided to let the chocolate speak for itself this year without the addition of extra fat-laden ingredients.

And…it’s been scientifically proven that a little dark chocolate is actually pretty good for you! So, this is a healthy Valentine’s Day treat! You’re welcome.

Valentine's Day Chocolate Bar

I enjoy all the ubiquitous chocolate barks during Christmas and decided to do a Valentine riff on it. I topped my Valentine’s Day Chocolate Bark with some of our favorite chocolate accompaniments, but the options are endless (coconut, nuts, coconut & almonds (think almond joys!), heart sprinkles, etc…)

Valentine's Day Chocolate Bark topped with non-pareils.

I truly ❤ the combination of orange and chocolate (the darker, the better), while Terry is all about cherries and chocolate. The kids like both flavors, but we also added nonpareil for some of the chocolate, just for variety.

And how can you have Valentine’s bark unless it is also heart-shaped?

By simply melting semi-sweet and bittersweet chocolate, pouring it into a pan, sprinkling the desired topping, letting it sit for 2 hours, and cutting it with a heart-shaped cookie cutter, I have the perfect Valentine’s Day Chocolate Bark.

The secret is to melt your chocolate over low heat, preferably in a double boiler or bain-marie, keeping the bowl out of the water.

Water and hot chocolate don’t mix in this situation…so when you pour your chocolate into your prepared pan, make sure you don’t get any drips from your pot onto your chocolate…not that I would know.

I had leftover candied orange peel from some bread I baked last Christmas, and it was just perfect.  Here’s the recipe I used. FYI…this stuff has a great shelf life!

And, if this chocolate bark does not cut it for you, I have 8 other Valentine’s Day treats for you.

Ingredients

  • 5.5 ounces good-quality Bittersweet Chocolate
  • 5.5 ounces good-quality Semi-sweet Chocolate

Toppings

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a bain marie or double boiler (if using double boiler, keep water below the bottom of the bowl so that it is not touching), bring water to a simmer.
  • Add chocolate and melt slowly, stiring
  • Line the bottom of an 8 x 8 pan with parchment paper and lightly butter the sides.
  • Pour chocolate over and sprinkle toppings on top.
  • Let sit at room temperature for 2 hours.
  • After 1 hour 45 minutes, test to see if it is set up.
  • If so, cut with cookie cutters.
  • If the chocolate is too hard to cut, heat cutter slightly by placing it (cutting side down) on a skillet over low heat. This will warm it just enough to cut through the set chocolate.

And check out these just about perfect boxes I found at Michaels…in the baking section.  It’s that kismet thing again! It seems they no longer carry these exact boxes, but they do have some other cute ones!

To make your Valentine’s Day Chocolate Bark an even more perfect gift, I have created some tags for you to use.

Print them on cardstock (just my humble opinion, but it seems that colors print much more vibrantly on cardstock) and cut.  I used a 2.5-inch round paper punch and I love how that looks, but feel free to cut them into squares or rectangles. A paper cutter will surely make that job easier.

  1. I’m a huge fan of truffles, but I love your idea of Valentine’s Day chocolate bark in heart cut-outs! Also, those printables look FABULOUS! I’m totally going to download and use them 🙂

  2. Lynn this is really easy to make. So easy in fact that I may be tempted to make more than one batch. If my waistline keeps on expanding the way it has been lately I’ll need new clothes. It’s a good excuse to eat, right?

  3. Lynn, these little treats are just gorgeous. I love the idea of using the cookie cutter to form the chocolate shapes. Of course, we are on the same page when it comes to the delicious combination of chocolate and orange. Your packaging is adorable too. I’m such a sucker for cute gift packaging.
So glad I popped over to see what you were up to. Happy new year!
